“When you need to start thinking about Medicaid planning is when your loved one is declining and it looks like they’re going to either move to needing an assisted living facility or they’re going to start needing skilled nursing. A lot of times, though, you don’t have that luxury to plan, and sometimes it’s an emergency situation. Your loved one had a stroke, and now they need nursing home care, and they are going to have to pay for a nursing home and need Medicaid to help them do that. You can do emergency planning too. Obviously, the more time you have, the more tools and options you’re going to have to plan for Medicaid, but emergency planning, we do that too. It’s best, if you think Medicaid is an option, that you go ahead and start planning as soon as possible and talk to someone who is skilled in getting all the options presented to you so you can figure out what’s best for your loved one’s situation.”
