World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15, 2015. Miller Elder Law Firm recognizes and supports all efforts to educate, prevent, and protect aging adults against all forms of elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
This awareness day gives us a chance to help spread the word about the prevention.
Unfortunately, it is estimated that millions of U.S. elders, from all walks of life, face abuse and neglect every year. Anyone can be victimized. However, there are things you can do to help protect yourself from abuse and neglect.
The NCEA, National Center on Elder Abuse, Dept. of Health and Human Services/Administration on Aging, presents tips on protecting yourself against elder abuse. Here are some highlights:
- Have your income directly deposited into your checking account
- Get your estate plan in place. This includes your living will, durable power of attorney, and revocable trust
- Get on the do not call registry. This will reduce telemarketing calls and potential scams
- Know the resources available to you for elder abuse reporting and assistance with nursing home issues
