This is a full participation, hands-on event. Each participant will be part of a trial team and take the case from the initial intake screening process to the final hearing. Forms, checklists, motions, sample orders, and other materials will be provided. We will teach you how to make objections, admit evidence, and deal with hearsay evidence and testimony. You will practice with the pros.

New In 2023, we have added an advanced track which will focus on civil litigation and best practices in discovery.

The conference is a boots-on-the-ground experience. You do not need litigation experience, but if you have some, we will shine you up.

Shannon M. Miller
Shannon M. Miller is a Florida Bar Board Certified attorney specializing in Elder Law, in Gainesville, Florida. Shannon served as a drafting member of the Financial Exploitation of Vulnerable Adults Workgroup. Shannon served as past President of The Academy of Florida Elder Law Attorneys, the Florida Joint Policy Task Force for the Elderly and Disabled, and is Vice Chair of the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar.
 
Genna Fasullo LaPeer
Genna Fasullo LaPeer is licensed to practice law in both New York and Florida and is a permanent Canadian snowbird now residing in Gainesville, Florida, with her husband and two children. Prior to joining The Miller Elder Law Firm, Genna worked as a prosecutor in the Fifth Judicial Circuit in Marion County. She is currently a member of the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar, leads the Exploitation Injunction Bootcamp for attorneys across the state, and takes pride in protecting seniors and people with disabilities.
Kathryn Lewis
Kathryn Lewis is a seasoned civil litigator, having served as Assistant State Attorney in Palm Beach County from 2009 to 2016. She was a member of the State Attorney’s Office White Collar Crime Unit, which handles complex financial theft and fraud cases. She continues to serve on the State Attorneys’ Elder Abuse Task Force. She is currently the co-chair of the Palm Beach County Bar Association Law Week committee and serves on the Board of Directors of Palm Beach Treasure Coast Area Agency on Aging.
 
Debra Slater
Debra J. Slater is a Florida Bar Board Certified Attorney specializing in Elder Law. She is the current Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar. She serves as Chair of the Legislative Committee of the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar. Debra Slater deals with unique issues that concern people as they age, which include loss of mental capacity, guardianship, and losing control of managing personal affairs. She has been successfully handing these issues in South Florida since 2003.
 
Jennifer Cates Lester
Jennifer Cates Lester is a Florida Bar Board Certified attorney specializing in Civil Trial Law. Her practice involves personal injury litigation, professional malpractice, and fiduciary litigation. Her background in civil litigation and insurance gives her special insight into insurance fraud cases, estate and trust litigation, and professional malpractice cases. Jennifer Lester has served as the chairperson for the Eight Circuit Grievance Committee, on the Bench and Bar Committee and has conducted multiple seminars on trial practice.
 
Twyla Sketchley
Twyla Sketchley is a Florida Bar Board Certified Elder Law Attorney. Her practice focuses on elder law, guardianship, fiduciary representation, and elder law-related litigation. She is the past Chair of the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar and a past President of the Academy of Florida Elder Law Attorneys. Twyla Sketchley is also the founder of The Sketchley Method, the nation’s leading resource on the prevention of the maltreatment of elders and people with disabilities.
